This book owes much to the inspirations and efforts of my two mentors: William H. C. Propp and Thomas E. Levy. Concerning the former, I wish to acknowledge his time, encouragement, and unsurpassed erudition not only in the preparation of this work, but for teaching me the Hebrew Bible in its ancient Near Eastern historical and linguistic contexts.
