This book owes much to the inspirations and efforts of my two mentors: William H. C. Propp and Thomas E. Levy. Concerning the former, I wish to acknowledge his time, encouragement, and unsurpassed erudition not only in the preparation of this work, but for teaching me the Hebrew Bible in its ancient Near Eastern historical and linguistic contexts. I thank the latter for his supervision in all areas pertaining to archaeology and anthropology, his camaraderie in the field, and his encouragement at my attempts to narrow the widening gap between text and artifact. Richard Elliott Friedman assisted me with Tabernacle sections and methodology; more important, he best taught me how to teach. David Noel Freedman deserves accolades for teaching me biblical Hebrew and establishing a record of publications. David M. Goodblatt ensured that my knowledge of ancient Israel transcended the Babylonian exile. Further thanks are owed to Jeffrey C. Geoghegan for optimism and fraternity in the face of Herculean tasks; he has become a cherished friend.
