`Heavy Petting' is the second album by Dr.Strangely Strange, the experimental Irish folk group beloved of the late broadcaster John Peel. Although a short-lived outfit, the good Doctor has been favourably compared to The Incredible String Band and their work has achieved cult status among record collectors.
Formed in Dublin in 1967, the original group comprised Tim Booth (vocals, guitar), Ivan Pawle (bass and keyboards) and singer Tim Goulding. They augmented the line up with guest musicians for this album, including 16-year-old Gary Moore, later to achieve fame with Thin Lizzy. Gary's fluent guitar provides some of the best moments on this diverse and entertaining set of original songs, beefed up by Fairport Convention drummer Dave Mattacks.
Joe Boyd, the young American based in London, produced `Heavy Petting', which was first released on the Vertigo label in 1970. The album has eleven tracks, including such quirky songs as `Ballad Of Wasps', `Summer Breeze', and `I Gave My Love An Apple'. There are hymns and laments, country jigs and boogie riffs - all played with lively enthusiasm and innocent charm. `Kilmanoyadd Stomp' has Ivan Pawle playing harmonium, while Goulding plays the recorder, which adds to the traditional flavour.
