Crazy Nights is the fourteenth studio album KISS. The album was recorded in June 1987 and officially released on September 18, 1987 by Mercury and Vertigo in Europe. The album featured keyboards which was another departure in their music style changing from their Lick It Up/Animalize/Asylum heavy metal sound into the 80's metal sound. KISS wanted, and more importantly needed, a massive hit album following the stable sales figures of “Lick It Up,” “Animalize,” and “Asylum.” Following their musical rehabilitation they required an injection of success to take them to the same level other bands were reaching at the time. With album sales hovering around the same mark for each album, more needed to be done. Likewise, touring stats remained similar between the tours for those three albums, indicating that the band was not really making much progress in reclaiming past glory and popularity. In essence, it was time for the band to try and take the ‘recovery’ of the band’s fortune to the next level. With all of the other projects that Gene was involved with it made sense to write-off 1986 and prepare for the next album. Where “Creatures Of The Night” had been the band’s sonic rehabilitation. “Lick It Up” through “Asylum” had been the band’s therapy, now it was time to reclaim their proper position on the musical food chain.
