Track 6 "America" had some insane transient peaks. So much so I had to lower the record level by at least 6db from the side one levels. The rest of the tracks on side two then lost considerable resolution so I re-ripped them at a more normal level. When I patched them together I still had an issue with the overall volume level when compared to side one. I had two choices, Lower the level on side one (unacceptable), present side two with less resolution after track 6 (also unacceptable) or, use some intelligent "dynamic compression" on track 6. This is the path I chose. I've never compressed any of my rips and hope I don't need to again. I wanted to be up front about this so you know that when you down one of my rips, you get the most natural representation of the vinyl source my equipment can provide. I'm happy with the result and feel this rip is a more enjoyable listening experience than the original CD.

It's the best rip I can do on any given day with the rig I have to work with. Like pbthal, I have a preference for "original" pressings. I have limited personal experience with 180g reissues but I've heard enough to know, I don't think it's worth spending $20 for a new 180g just because my original copy has some surface noise. I totally appreciate those who do purchase these new pressings and make them available to those of us can't afford them, rip our own, or have old copies lying around. They fill an important void for vinyl lovers and represent a significant savings if you don't have a bunch of old records lying around.
