Hi. My name is Mishka. I am a singer, songwriter, instrumentalist, voice teacher and part time massage therapist, living between two incredibly vibrant cities : London and Berlin. The music I play is hard for me to describe, but it brings together the genres I love –jazz, folk, and music from all over Brazil – through a number of different projects. I love collaborating with other musicians and I consider myself lucky enough to have a musical family of people I have worked with over the span of many years and over several countries – England, Germany, The Philippines and Brazil – and who I continue to work with and be inspired by. Most recently, I released an album in the UK with the great Pete Churchill called Stories to Tell. It is a collection of incredible songs written by Pete that we recorded with an astonishing group of musicians: Mark Lockheart, Adriano Adewale and Ben Barritt. I am also working on a new duo project in Berlin with one of my favourite piano players in the world, Pedro Carneiro Silva. We are in the middle of co-writing for an album that we hope to record in 2016.

Beau Coup is condemned to forever remain a cult classic; it is one of the many exciting bands (and solo artists) who will always be fondly remembered within the AOR and pomprock minded community, but who outside this sphere have never received the recognition they so richly deserved…

Phil Woods was only 22 at the time of this program (reissued on CD), but he was already an explosive and very talented bop-oriented altoist. This obscure set, one of his earliest recordings, has seven group originals, plus the lone standard "Mad About the Boy," and is full of excitement. Woods, trumpeter Jon Eardley, pianist George Syran, bassist Teddy Kotick and drummer Nick Stabulas all display both youthful energy and a strong knowledge of Charlie Parker's innovations, making this an essential, if little-known acquisition for bop collectors.

After the deserved artistic, critical and popular success of Extensions, the Manhattan Transfer went back to ace producer Jay Graydon for Mecca for Moderns, which almost matches its predecessor in its contemporary energy while drawing selectively from the past. Outstanding is the handclapping treatment of the 1965 rock tune "The Boy from New York City" (a number seven hit single) and the happily swinging vocalese of the Count Basie band's "Until I Met You (Corner Pocket)," although their version of Charlie Parker's difficult "Confirmation" isn't nearly as assured. There is also an ample dose of the inventive weirdness that invaded Extensions: the African/Caribbean "(Wanted) Dead or Alive," with its checklist of dictators, that segues right into a tongue-in-cheek secret agent spoof, "Spies in the Night"; or the ambitious, wordless composition "Kafka." No longer a mere nostalgia act, the Manhattan Transfer had not only caught up with the times, they were now slightly ahead of them as well.

The Best and Beyond doesn't feature original versions. Presumably put together at some point during the 2000s, this features re-recordings from Gino Vannelli and his band. Dedicated fans might notice that "The Surest Things Can Change," first released on A Pauper in Paradise (1977), even gets a rewrite, but they probably wouldn't give this a second glance since it has the appearance of a basic best-of. That's part of the disc's problem; while these re-recordings are of decent quality and couldn't possibly rival the originals, one would have to be a keen observer – and notice the production credits on the back – to see that it serves a purpose different from a typical compilation.

Hamburg based power metal band IRON SAVIOR was facing a problem: what to do when your early albums are not available regularly anymore but a re-issue is not possible due to legal reasons? Well, the decision was made to use this situation to give the material a sonic upgrade. What Sielck refers to, became a 19 tracks strong double album now, titled ‘Reforged - Riding On Fire’, which consists of the best and most popular songs IRON SAVIOR have released so far. These 2017 re-recordings come with a much more powerful sound of course, but the band managed the task to keep the songs’ character and feel.

Here pianist Kenny Werner debuts a new trio, with bassist Johannes Weidenmüller and drummer Ari Hoenig. The set, recorded live in Paris, begins with Werner's "Amonkst" (previously recorded with Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette on 1998's A Delicate Balance). The rest of the program is mostly non-original; some of the workhorses from Werner's older trio's repertoire are freshly reconsidered. "Nardis" and "Dolphin Dance" are played in seven, while Bill Evans' "Time Remembered" is prefaced by an unaccompanied Werner solo titled "Bill Remembered." The Evans tune segues seamlessly into a roaring "Lonnie's Lament," played up-tempo, much like Joe Lovano did on his 1994 Quartets record. Another highlight is Werner's stirring adaptation of Bach's "Sicilienne," which he also sets up with a lovely solo prelude.

Much like 2001's Songs I Heard and 2004's Only You, 2009's Your Songs finds vocalist/pianist Harry Connick, Jr. coming up with an urbane and passionate set of American popular songs and contemporary pop classics that he both performs and orchestrates. While his previous recordings leaned toward the classicist side – Only You featured songs of the '50s and '60s – Your Songs features a more eclectic mix of standards and pop songs with Connick's own lush orchestration lending an overall aesthetic of languid romanticism.

Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz called on pianist extraordinaire Vince Guaraldi and his trio to compose and perform music that would reflect the humor, charm, and innocence of Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and the entire Peanuts gang for their 1965 Christmas TV special. It was a perfect match: Guaraldi strings together elegant, enticing arrangements that reflect the spirit and mood of Schulz's work and introduce contemporary jazz to youngsters with grace, charm, and creativity. "What Child Is This" touches on cool jazz's richly textured percussive nuances, while "The Christmas Song" reflects Christmas' relaxing, mellow moments.

Here Garbarek is approaching the extremes of his style, appearing once again with the Jan Garbarek Group. He has his usual stark, meditative pieces, interspersed with some cutting-edge work, occasionally spinning just enough out of control to be exciting. And in other places he ventures headlong into the syrupy fields of Kenny G.-land. All pieces on this record are titled after quotes from poems by Tomas Transtromer, and though the actual connection to these poems remains tenuous at best, they do add a provocative element to the pieces themselves, which beg for at least some programmatic interpretation. Excellent bass work by Eberhard Weber, particularly on the more avant-garde pieces (e.g., "The Crossing Place" and "One Day in March I Go Down to the Sea and Listen"). Multi-instrumentalist David Torn is primarily responsible for the more aggressive edge this record takes.

Celebrated UK rockers BURN are back with a new album titled "Ice Age". Migrations, introduces the music of Brazilian composer and saxophonist Gaia Wilmer, an emerging voice in the contemporary jazz community. Drawing inspiration from Brazilian music, its harmonies, rhythms and melodies, and from contemporary jazz, Gaia creates a unique and colorful world of music that is both cerebral and emotional. Her music draws inspiration from composers such as Hermeto Pascoal, Guillermo Klein, Kenny Wheeler, Vijay Iyer and Maria Schneider, and the pieces generate their shapes and feelings from the idea of home; the strong relationship with Brazilian and Latin American cultures and with contemporary jazz and the relationship between people.
