    Jules Mouquet (1867‐1946) was born in Paris and studied composition at that city’s Conservatoire with Theodore Dubois. A winner of the prestigious Prix de Rome he became Professor at the Paris Conservatoire, and established himself as a key figure in the French cultural elite, a composer, teacher and author, writing prefaces and notes for works by prominent authors, including Rimbaud, Flaubert and Baudelaire. This new recording presents Mouquet’s complete works for flute and piano. Their titles (La Flûte de Pan, Danse Grecque, Eglogue, Berceuse, Divertissement Grec) already hint at the character of the music: evocative, scenic, often using modal scales and generally influenced by the warm, sensual and sweetly‐romantic language of the young Debussy.

    We all know popcorn as a sweet and salty confectionery made from maize that is sold in cinemas. But it also gave rise to an R&B instrumental, The Popcorn, written by James Brown in 1969. Around that time, a new form of party music developing in Belgium was named ‘Popcorn’ after the James Brown hits. Rather like Northern Soul in Wigan, it relied on disc jockeys, notably Gilbert Govaert, unearthing black soul singles from the early 1960s.     Aeolus continues it's successful cooperation with the Belgian organist and titular of the Cathedral of Antwerp Peter Van de Velde and presents with this new double-album the complete organ works of the Belgian composer Guy Weitz (1883-1970). The album is enriched by some major organ works of the well-known Weitz contemporary Joseph Jongen (1873-1953). This double album was recorded on the organs of Antwerp Cathedral (Pierre Schyven, 1891, last recording before its restoration in 2014) and of the Laurentius Church of Antwerp (Pels & Son, 1934), a huge building mounted in the 1932 in art deco style. Aeolus' famous state-of-the-art recording technique assures a perfect rendition of the generous acoustics of both church buildings and underlines the consistently symphonic character of these post romantic works.

    Like his father, Neeme Järvi, Paavo Järvi is an internationally renowned classical music conductor of Estonian heritage with a deep catalog of recordings.     Grigory Sokolov is among the most important Russian pianists to have emerged from the latter half of the 20th century. His career has both suffered and thrived from restraints foisted on him by Soviet authorities: like other iconic Russian keyboard giants of the past, in particular Sviatoslav Richter and Lazar Berman, he was prohibited from appearance in the West for a time, but when he finally debuted in western Europe and the United States, his career took a meteoric upswing, with Sokolov suddenly in heavy demand in the world's major concert halls. Another aspect to Sokolov's career that has added to his charismatic though eccentric persona has been his general avoidance of the recording studio. Most of his recordings are drawn from live concerts, and they attest to his virtuosity and interpretive genius in unusual but generally conservative fare: while his repertory takes in Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, Chopin, Brahms, Rachmaninov, and Prokofiev, it also includes Byrd, Couperin, Rameau, and Froberger.
