Jon Lamanna co-founded The Alpha Fire last year. The Seneca Falls vocalist already had become a familiar face on the regional music scene, having performed with Cry to the Blind for several years. However, he had no idea how quickly his new act would take off. Clear Channel Radio and Cumulus Media, companies that own 453 radio stations nationwide, work together to support unsigned rock bands across the country. Dozens of those stations, including Syracuse-based 95X, participated in the neXt2rockRadio contest, which pitted unsigned bands against each other in a grand battle for the top prize: a record deal with Big Machine Label Group.

My introduction to the band known as Tub Ring was back in 2008 when they opened for Mindless Self Indulgence. I hadn't listened to anything from them and was more excited that they were touring with the guitarist of Creature Feature. I was absolutely taken aback when they took the stage and performed their brand of chaotic everything and the kitchen sink music. Since then I've been following them vigorously. Unfortunately they all but disappeared after their 2010 album The Secret Handshake. However following a successful crowd funding campaign to make a best of vinyl the band is back with a brand new full length album called A Choice Of Catastrophes. So does this album deliver after seven years? Or is it just a catastrophe?

The Buffalo band Lemuria didn’t release their debut album until 2008, but they started in 2004. And they’ve always sounded something like 2004, or at least like my version of 2004. That means they sound like Spock haircuts, like H&M sweaters, like road trips in beat-up cars that still have tape decks instead of CD players, like Yeungling, like crushed-up Ritalin, like back issues of Optic Nerve scattered around bedroom floors, like semi-ironically getting really into The O.C. and American Idol, like browsing music writers’ blogs in the endless downtime at my office job, like signing up for Netflix only because the local neighborhood video-rental place doesn’t have Jaws 3. I am, as you’ve probably already figured out, pretty ridiculously sentimental about this period in my life, and I hear that sentimentality mirrored back to me in Lemuria’s plainspoken, harmony-rich, vaguely emo DIY music.

I’ve never been to the Pacific North West but I’ve often felt it. It’s hard not to, especially if you payed any attention to indie rock over the past couple of decades. An unboundaried area of the United States, nestled loosely between the Pacific Ocean and the Cascadia Mountains, the area has long been an musical sanctuary of-sorts, the lie of the land, the magic of the coast and mountains, lending influence first to traditional folk music and latterly to grunge and various alternative strands. More than the pocket of scenes that crop up in cities, the influence of the PNW is something different, more intangible and poetic, great waves of weather slowly reshaping the landscape over great passages of time.

Electric Looneyland is the second album by Liverpool duo Serpent Power. Ian Skelly, previously of The Coral, along with Paul Malloy, previously of The Zutons and The Coral, have created their own world of psych-rock, horror and weird spaciness on Electric Looneyland, all stemming from them finding some old keyboards in a skip.

"Heavy Metal Fire" is an EP that contains four new songs, as well as three songs from the band 2001 "Spikes & Leather" demo. Musically, the band is fast and furious real metal chock full of speedy licks, clean vocals, high screams, fast double bass, and all those other wonderful elements that make up good metal.

Are you in a dark, semi-hopeless mood due to end of the year deadlines, the pressures and conflicts of the holiday season and the decidedly return-of-the-robber-barons state of politics? Oh, we're sorry - are we making it worse? Allow us to suggest there is a light at the end of the tunnel. It is, in fact, a Pale Lights. And what are Pale Lights? Well, as longtime readers of this blog know they are one of the best and criminally under-exposed guitar pop bands in the United States. Purveyors of melodies and lyrics masterfully crafted to last the test of time, the Brooklyn-based band has just released new LP The Stars Seemed Brighter with ten tracks that will make you smile and put a bounce in your step. Worries? What worries?

Self-styled Christian apocalyptic indie outfit DISSIDENT PROPHET return with Strange Days, the title track opener finding them in almost Journey mode with its 80s keyboards sound, big chords and soaring chorus, a sound that tumbles over into Shadowlands before Wait For The City introduces some swirling Eastern colours and a touch of spaghetti western guitars. Regardless of whether you subscribe to their beliefs and philosophies, musically this is probably their most accessible and best album yet, loaded up with muscular guitars, jubilant keyboards, nagging riffs and big catchy melodies as well as more snarly, fuzzed up heavy moments like Matador that comes with that guitar moment from Starman before it launches into the chorus balanced by softer offerings such as the initially acoustic Everybody Knows with what sounds like birdsong in the background.

Aussie rock icon Sarah McLeod was born in Adelaide, Australia. In part due to her religious private school upbringing (on track in her plans to become a stockbroker), McLeod did not start making music until her late teens. On a vacation with friends in Bali, she was given her first taste of performance. A few short guitar lessons later she was hooked for life. Her first group got on its feet a short time later under the name "Hell's Kitchen." The band went through a few different permutations before morphing into Superjesus, who would go on to become one of Australia's most notable rock groups. Over the course of ten years with Superjesus McLeod won three ARIA awards and became one of her country's most recognizable faces. In 2005 she set off to pursue her solo career, signed to Festival Mushroom Records.

Another spectacular progressive album, but this one sound more like what you would expect from a progressive metal band. The speed and thrash elements are all gone and replaced with a more melodic and even commercial approach, however the production is much improved. The lead work is stellar as are the vocals. Despite the style change, Teramaze's second disc is still outstanding.

Diabolus in Musica is the eighth studio album by American thrash metal band Slayer. Released on June 9, 1998, it is the third studio album to feature drummer Paul Bostaph. Guitarist Jeff Hanneman wrote most of the album's content which has been described as Slayer's most experimental album. It is the band's first studio album to be played mostly in C♯ tuning. The album's title is a Latin term for "The Devil in Music", a musical interval known for its dissonance. Lyrical themes explored on the album include religion, cultural deviance, death, insanity, war, and homicide.
