Hard Rock, Heavy Psych

The Mourning LP is among my absolute favourites. The main attraction here, as most will agree, is the monster track at the end. But I can wholeheartedly say the rest of the tracks aren't far behind in terms of quality. The opener displays the garage rock influences in full force. It is energetic, pleasantly sloppy, and balls-to-the wall awesome. Part two is more loose and fuzzy garage rock jamming that should sit nicely with speed demons, potheads, and acid freaks alike. The lyrics are also quite appealing to folks like myself. In fact all the lyrics on this LP are of the radical, protest sort that speak to me VERY clearly. The third tune continues the fuzz tradition. It's one of the less memorable songs here, but still a fantastic jam. Rock On comes next and contains some catchy playing and more of that fuzzed-as-fuck guitar that I absolutely adore - complete with the obligatory zonked out guitar solos. The garage influence is also on full display here again. Find A Way is more great social angst stuff and crude guitar playing. One of the slightly less memorable tunes, but still awesome as hell. I have nothing but love for this album to be honest, so even the weakest songs are going to be top class for me. We have one more song to go before the big finale we've all been waiting for and it does the trick once again. Breakthrough begins with some machine gun fire and the smell of napalm, and eventually brings more socially conscious anti-war lyrics to the table; and of course the beautiful druggy guitar solos are still there in full force. This whole LP perfectly echoes the dark and turbulent times that it was recorded during and just screams anti-establishment all over - my kind of fucking party! And with the conclusion of Breakthrough we come to the moment we've been awaiting. Words are pointless in describing the awesomeness of Dead Meat, but I'll still try. It begins fairly slow, but very brooding and heavy nonetheless. When the second part commences things pick up and get considerably more BRUTAL; death seems to be imminent. Things soon take a turn for the worse with John Anderson screaming, "Look at what they've done to me, cause I don't think like them/God fearing citizens that call themselves men/Led like a lamb to slaughter, taken from my home/Now my torn and lifeless body's rotting on its bones." You can't get much better than that as far as early 70's doom rock goes. What follows are the heaviest sections of the song and what truly make this album one for the seekers of obscure proto-metal. By the end, after the smoke has settled, everything has been laid to rest. An apocalyptic wasteland is all that remains. This album is 100 percent satisfying to my ears and earns perfect marks from me. I will end things with a righteous poem contained in the CD booklet that I have. Not sure if it's by the band or not, but it perfectly fits to the music…
