Energy abounds from these German thrashers. Hot on the heels of last year’s solid Blood on Canvas album, Death Squad Chronicles as the seventh album sees the group expand back to a quintet with the arrival of second guitarist Dominik - yet no lapse in bone crushing material. Taking a lot of the classic 80s material from early demos or albums and giving this a spit shine polish befitting of the band’s 40th anniversary, the record also includes two new songs to prove their vitality remains razor sharp.CD 1 Tracklist (Death Squad Chronicles):
Speedy riffs bounce next to equally rabid rhythmic-style vocals, the additional gang-like punch and relentless tempo pummeling indicative of these musicians appeal to a lot of the ardent thrash followers especially across the German/ European scene. Lead breaks on the brink of disaster, only to be pulled into safe waters, Lee’s delivery stacked for primal attack, clearer than Mille but intense like Tom Angelripper. The new songs like “Last Round Is On Us” and “Proud Pariah” combine the greatness of their domestic finesse along with the second wave of Bay Area thrash that took Slayer ferocity to Dark Angel levels of madness. Arnd and Dominik wield their guitars in lockstep mode – using Ben’s bass as that bottom end third weapon on “Battle to the Last” that goes from mid-tempo war marching passages to a blitzkrieg of circular riffs hellbent on executing this swirling metalhead insanity. An early demo favorite “Victims” stands up well from its origins in 1985 - providing another time capsule memory of thrash’s infancy when musicians combined aspects of punk, hardcore, and NWOBHM into a faster, heavier sound. Towards the end of the record songs like “Defenders of Justice” and “Predetermined Destiny” expand the Darkness template - showcasing a bit more musical might, band interplay, and versatility.
Special editions of this record include a bonus CD featuring guest vocal appearances from the past/present Teutonic thrash movement - Kreator, Warrant, Assassin, Hellbutcher/Nifelheim, Toxpack, Fueled by Fire, and Traitor just some of those acts. Normally this scribe steers clear of re-recordings, but in the case of Darkness a lot of their early albums never received proper worldwide distribution. In the end, this would be an ideal primer if you have never owned any of their albums - beyond the 40th anniversary celebration of the group.
