    Label: CPO - Date: 1994

The name of Paul Dessau (1894-1979) probably summons up rather vague aural images of not unWeill-like music for Brecht's later plays. Dessau's American meeting with Brecht in 1942 was certainly a decisive event, helping to explain why the composer spent his last 30 years in the German Democratic Republic. Yet Dessau also met Schoenberg in America, and as these quartets reveal, his musical engagement with the ideals of that great iconoclast was no less complex and protracted than his involvement with Marxism.
These seven quartets span more than four decades, from I 932 to 1975. Taken as a whole, they suggest a determined struggle to come to terms with modernism which achieved success only at the very end, in the last two quartets written in the early 1970s. The keys to that success were a reduced reliance on the kind of earnest post-tonal counterpoint that dominates the earlier works, and the embrace of an intensity and flexibility that comes from tracing modernism back to its expressionist roots. While the Third, Fourth and Fifth Quartets (1943-55) indicate that Dessau had learned much of value from Schoenberg (especially, I would guess, from Schoenberg's Fourth Quartet) it was only after 1970 that he was able to match strong feelings with sufficiently striking musical ideas–ideas which evoke the world of Webern's Movements, Op. 5 more directly than anything by Schoenberg.
These works may well be of historical interest rather than essential listening, but in these wellprepared, well-recorded performances we can obtain a vivid impression of how one thinking composer wrestled with the paradoxes of a life in which musical and political convictions did not always move in parallel.
