Michael Kocáb, one of the legends of Czech rock music, played with Australian guitarist Glenn Proudfoot in one reincarnation of Czech rock band Prazský výber. Now, they combined forces with other great musicians - Virgil Donati, one of the best drummers of our time and Billy Sheehan on bass.
The result of their collaboration is an album titled Aftershocks. Aftershocks is by no means music for the masses. It's musician's music. It's music for fans of Kocáb, Proudfoot, Donati and / or Sheehan. It is quite simply put a mixture of Prazský výber and Planet X. Using the quirkiness of the Czech band and the technical brilliance of Planet X you get a solid rock album without the progressive and jazzy elements of Planet X and the bluesy and folky elements of Prazský výber. Proudfoot is not as versatile or innovative as MacAlpine, Pavlicek or Garsed, Kocáb is not as subtle or as progressive as Sherinian, Donati is just too wild and creative for his playing to fit within the rock genre and Sheehan has his own distorted style which is however somewhat hidden in the mix here.
The combination of all the elements builds a great platform musically. Kocáb is however not only a keyboard player, but also a lead vocalist, and that's where I see the main difference between Prazský výber and Planet X. There are vocals on every song, the lyrics are in English and unfortunately they are not very good. That's been the weakness of the later albums of Prazský výber anyway and now the ability to write a good line was limited even further by writing in English.
If you are a fan of any of the four people, you will probably enjoy this album. It is not a good introduction to any of them however. It is too different and too unique.by Vaclav Smerda, amazon
