    Fibich composed 376 short piano pieces under the title Nalady, Dojny a Upominky, or Moods, Impressions and Reminiscences (of which only No. 139 is at all well known, in dozens of arrangements, as ''Poeme''). They form what Gerald Abraham called—in the best study of them, to be found in his collection Slavonic and Romantic Music (London: 1968)—''An erotic diary for piano''. The object of this extraordinary musical homage was a girl called Anezka Schulzova, a former piano pupil who completely won his heart and caused the break-up of his second marriage: she was a highly intelligent, emancipated woman who read widely, wrote dramatic criticism, and provided him with librettos as well as her love and companionship. In this extraordinary sequence of pieces, he describes her moods, dress, gestures and movements, even every intimate detail of her body, and his own tender, passionate, sometimes amused, sometimes jealous response to all she meant to him. Not all of them are by any means 'erotic' in the narrow sense, but the whole adds up to a detailed portrait of a woman who inspired a movingly complete emotional, physical and intellectual love. It is really as this that they are best heard, including the selection of 19 here recorded. They are tiny atmospheric pieces, touching on a gesture which there is seldom time to develop (they mostly last between one and two minutes).

    A complete performance is scarcely imaginable, but Kvapil is adept at suggesting and holding some of these brief moods to make an attractive sequence; and he goes on to explore with elegance the five studies of paintings by Ruysdael, Breughel, Fra Angelico (a graceful dance of angels from the Last Judgement triptych), Correggio and Watteau (a charming generalized impression of his fetes galantes with some stylized period dancing). It is an appealing and touching record.
