    This "Sweet Pain" is not a prog-rock, has nothing in common with KISS-tribute band or Texan metal act - it is very interesting act from California dating back to the 60s, which managed to get signed by United Artists and recorded their debut album in 1970.

    They played rather typical free-wheeling psychedelia with interesting vocal harmonies and tasteful solos, often combined with the pieces proper for "foot-stomping - hands clapping" band). The opening for the first song ("Upside Down…") sounds not unlike "Creedence", "Pine Canyon Stream" is an excellent acoustic ballad lead by 12-string guitar, "By Myself" is another beautiful romantic masterpiece featuring pleasant singing, while lengthy "Joy" was the main attraction of the show. "Start Off With You" is an excellent track - an intro sounds like acoustic ballad by "Deep Purple", and then evolves into "Santana" (circa "Abraxas" - Abraxas) improvisations and polyphonic singing.
    "Sweet Pain" featured Bob Spalding on lead guitar (he played with Chuck Berry), Carl Johnson (guitar), Dave Riordan (rhythm, vocals), Frank Demme (bass, vocals), Marty Foltz (drums & percussion), J.C. Phillips (maracas,marimba,bonker, vocals). As far as I know the second album exists too, although I haven't seen myself.
    Please keep in mind, that although the musicians look like Wild Bunch, the music is not hard'n heavy. Plus: the CD might be re-issued on Retro Dics International S.A. (Spain), which has different titles for songs on the CD intself - follow the correct names in the leaflet.
    Maybe not first league, but solid and pleasant album.
