VA - Gayda Istanbul (2009)

The Balkans, Thrace, Roumelia and İstanbul… A history which reaches Istanbul passing through Roumelia with its rivers transcending steep cliffs, with its mountains and winds… A great heritage created by many languages, religions, traditions and cultures which have always known how to share life for hundreds of years… The land of the defeated and the heroes; hatred and love; cruelty and grace; poverty and wealth; wars and peace…

You never know how some voices and colours of the years that fly by could fade away or disappear. These colours and voices witnessed by the history seem to be mixed up in and sent away with the howl of the wind blowing for many seasons. And the story of Gayda, which used to be a widespread wind instrument in the Balkans and Thrace once upon a time, is a story like this… Emphasizing the transformation of a living tradition and a common culture, Gayda has become the name of our trip to Istanbul…

According to a Gypsy proverb, “the road is a part of the destination!” Now our road has become our destination… We gathered what we saw, understood and learnt on this road together to share somewhere with someone. This album was also a nice break and a refreshing stop for us to share the experience we have gained on our way until today. And now while you are listening to our music, maybe will set off together saying; “Now it is time to see the nice things in the past and future. It is time to see new things!”… Maybe the songs we sing together will remind us of different lives in the past… And who knows what these songs will tell us about the possibility of a different way of life…
