One of Europe's best guitarists pays tribute to Wes Montgomery on this mostly trio outing from 2003. Irio DePaula is obviously influenced to some extent by Montgomery's style of playing, though he finds his own voice in this collection of ten Montgomery compositions and the well-known standard "For Heaven's Sake." The best examples of his work include the very fluid interpretations of "Jingles" and "Four on Six," along with a soulful take of "Bumpin'." Organist Riccardo Ballerini provides strong support without overdoing it, while drummer Petro Jodice helps to keep the musicians on track. Vibraphonist Claudio Lo Cascio adds a nice touch to two tracks. Irio DePaula has recorded extensively for Philology and deserves to be more widely known; this fine effort should help spread the word. –Ken Dryden
