As a relentless explorer of the new and unknown, Jean chose five of the most innovative composers alive today to commission for the project. The album’s five new works are: Louis Karchin’s Evocations, John Aylward’s Twin Suspension, Mathew Rosenblum’s Throat, Jeff Stadelman’s wills & wonts, and Yiorgos Vassilandonakis' X-asti. Jean explains some of her motivations for seeking out and commissioning music that breaks new ground, “I keep trying to get wilder in this conservative time. As a child of the ‘60s and ‘70s, I was influenced by a lot of the experimental and theatrical music going on at the time – I like to keep that sense of boundary-pushing alive.”

Where the original Rated X project of 2008 sought thematic music to explore the limits of the fairly traditional instrumental pairing of clarinet and piano, Rated X II [Extreme Measures II], in the words of John Aylward, one of the composers, “commissions a wide variety of composers to produce works that push the genre” for the less familiar pairing of clarinet and percussion. ... For Kopperud, the X in Rated X denotes “extreme.” “This project is about going out to the edge,” she says, and “wanting people to be more creative.” She finds that too often, “music has gotten easier but less challenging.” Rated X II, she says, “with all these fabulous percussion instruments,” is for “an educated audience not afraid to hear something new, something violent or ugly, or that they may not understand... a young audience, a classical audience, people who like percussion and clarinet.”
