In the first half of the 20th Century people in the Netherlands were still very much preoccupied with ranks and classes. Members of the so-called ‘upper’ layers of society (doctors, engineers, nobility etc) used to focus on France as a guide for cultural taste.
It comes as no surprise, then, that Rudolf Esher, son of a geologist and nephew to the famous graphical artist Maurits Escher - as such belonging to the higher strata - should have turned his face southwards when developing his musical style.
Influences of Ravel and Debussy on this here record. Escher was a fine musician.
