According to the 2005 Estudio General de Medios (General Media Study), it has about 2.1 million readers; El Mundo ("The World") is second with an estimated 1.29 million readers. El País is often referred to as a newspaper of record from Spain, along with its fellow Madrid morning dailies El Mundo and ABC.
