On the banks of a river in Hunan during a sweltering summer, two kids experience life, love, and interminable boredom in director Yang Heng's leisurely paced slice of life. As the temperature rises, Ali and Xiao Yu swipe mopeds, trick youngsters into giving up their cash, and even start the occasional scuffle. Of course, there are also girls to be charmed, but what's the fun in trying to hook up with a girl who doesn't already have a boyfriend? As the realization sets in that Ali and Xiao Yu will probably spend the rest of their lives in the Chinese countryside, each day slowly bleeds into the next.
