A look at how the outcome of the War of 1812—and the destiny of North America—hinged on an explosion at Fort York in modern-day Toronto, Ontario.
In June 1812, thirty six years after the Declaration of Independence, the United States of America declared war on Britain and invaded its colony of Upper Canada – but not before suffering their own losses. Across the Atlantic, Britain was already in a life and death struggle with Napoleon in Europe. Upper Canada was poorly defended and vulnerable to attack. President Thomas Jefferson declared that victory would be a 'mere matter of marching;. But this isn't what happened.
The day was April 27, 1813. The War of 1812 between America and England raged in the shadow of the Napoleonic Wars in Europe. American forces defeated the British in the Battle of York in present-day Toronto. It was to be a launching point for an offensive against the British navy. Then, a powerful explosion causing significant American casualties changed the course of the war. Using dramatic reconstructions, stunning CGI, and archaeological evidence, Dan Snow seeks to uncover the history and secrets of an event that shaped the entire war between the United States and the then-British colony of Upper Canada.
History Television's Explosion 1812 looks at the Battle of York and unearths new evidence around this lesser-known event from the War of 1812 and sheds a new light on these events.
