The recovery of a notebook written by the Essex's cabin boy Thomas Nickerson provides viewers a true firsthand account of the amazing escape of the fortunate few. The startling reality of the epic struggle for survival is brought to life by leading-edge Computer Generated Imaging and elaborate re-enactments.
Trapped in their pummeled boats for 90 storm-tossed days, the dwindling crew is stranded about as far from land as it is possible to be anywhere on Earth. Enduring starvation, madness, and the most gruesome tests of the human spirit, they revert to the most primitive instinct - SURVIVAL.
Using computer effects and detailed re-enactments, this film weaves together the manuscripts, letters, newspaper accounts, logs and maps of the time to build the drama of the Essex and the heroic efforts of the men who sailed her.
