Filip buys an 8mm movie camera when his first child is born. Because it's the first camera in town, he's named official photographer by the local Party boss. His horizons widen when he is sent to regional film festivals with his first works but his focus on movie making also leads to domestic strife and philosophical dilemmas. Fine early Kieslowski film finds a man purchasing an 8mm camera to record the early years of his daughter's life. He ends up filming just about everything he sees and is recruited by the factory he works at to make films for them. But the camera has become an addiction and the man is unable to stop, causing him to get in trouble at work and his marriage to hit the skids. "Camera Buff" ("Amator") is a film - like so many of the more daring Eastern European films of its time - about the creation of art in the midst of opposition. It is also about the costs that come with making such a choice, and the triumphs that can also result.
