Film following the clean-up operation at Chernobyl and the elite team of Soviet scientists working in areas of radiation that would be considered lethal in the West, whilst they hunt for missing fuel, uranium and plutonium, anxious that these could cause a second accident.
21 years after the nuclear reactor at Chernobyl burned and covered vast areas with clouds of radiation.
In 1986 the nuclear reactor at Chernobyl nuclear power plant burned and along with it the hopes and lives of over 300,00 people who were uprooted from towns and villages adjacent to Chernobyl. Thousands were diagnosed with thyroid cancer in the years after and millions more lived in fear for their health, after the radiation clouds swept across the surrounding geographic area which is now part of Ukraine.
As the area affected by the disaster collapsed socially and economically, authorities in Russia and the former Soviet republics have been appealing for assistance since then.
<b>Note about file:</b><br />This file was digitised from a VHS recording of the programme. The picture quality isfair, however, the sound track has some occasional static, especially towards thebeginning.<br /><br />This episode won an Emmy. It covers the sarcophagus built to contain the remains of thedestroyed reactor and the work of the Russian scientists, staff and soldiers who riskedand continue to risk their lives in the clean-up operation.<br /><br />I think this is the 1996 updated version of the original 1991 programme and includes anextra 10 minutes of interviews with several of the original scientists. It is shorterthan the 60 minutes described on the BBC website and may have been edited.
