Fritz Lang completed only two episodes of what was meant to be a four-part serial, about the exotic adventures of the San Francisco sportsman Kay Hoog (Carl de Vogt), before the plug was pulled by the producer, Erich Pommer. Legend has it that Lang’s commitment to this project prevented him from directing “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.” It is unmistakably an early effort (1919) but it does contain clear signs of Lang’s fascination with geometrical compositions, underground lairs (a secret city beneath San Francisco Chinatown) and mysterious criminal organizations.
