For hundreds of years, until 1753, no one needed a church wedding. Marriage could be made through sex, presents and promises. As a result many people were caught in confusion, never knowing whether they were lovers or husband and wife. The programme investigates the tale of a young widow, Jane Sheppard, and her love affair with Edward Fuller, a man 20 years her senior. It’s a story of mutual attraction and bitter misunderstanding which resulted in a gruelling court battle.
