    Frech | 1979 | ISBN: 3772403883 | 48 pages | PDF | 6 MB

    Cambridge University Press | 1991-05-31 | ISBN: 0521402174 | 336 pages | PDF | 6 MB

This is the first study of French-American relations in the critical postwar period, 1945-1954, which makes use of recently opened diplomatic archives and personal papers in France and the United States. Wall examines the American role in French diplomacy, economic reconstruction, military policy, politics, and the reshaping of French society from labor unions to consumer tastes and films. Particular emphasis is placed on American attempts to combat the influence of French Communism and achieve a stable, centrist regime avoiding the extremes of right and left.

The United States and the State of Israel
    Oxford University Press, USA | 1993-03-11 | ISBN: 0195045769 | 424 pages | PDF | 4 MB

Schoenbaum's book is a history of one of the most remarkable liaisons in international experience, a portrait of the special relationship between the last remaining superpower and the tiny Jewish state between the Jordan and the Mediterranean, and a study of how that relationship grew and works. From Truman to Bush, the United States has assured Israel's existence, while providing billions in military and economic support. Over the same period, no U.S. president has ever submitted a formal treaty of alliance to the Senate, or even moved the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

    Oxford University Press, USA | 1994-10-27 | ISBN: 0195090616 | 240 pages | PDF | 4 MB

Hailed in The New York Times Book Review as "the doyen of Middle Eastern studies," Bernard Lewis has been for half a century one of the West's foremost scholars of Islamic history and culture, the author of over two dozen books, most notably The Arabs in History, The Emergence of Modern Turkey, The Political Language of Islam, and The Muslim Discovery of Europe. Eminent French historian Robert Mantran has written of Lewis's work: "How could one resist being attracted to the books of an author who opens for you the doors of an unknown or misunderstood universe, who leads you within to its innermost domains: religion, ways of thinking, conceptions of power, culture–an author who upsets notions too often fixed, fallacious, or partisan."

Telecommunications in Europe (Communication and Society)
    Oxford University Press, USA | 1992-08-20 | ISBN: 0195070526 | 536 pages | PDF | 31 MB

Telecommunications represents one of the largest high technology equipment and service industries in the world. Today there is growing support within the telecommunications industry for competition domestically and in world trade which is directly at odds with its distinctive political tradition of monopoly provision and minimally competitive international trade practices. This raises major questions, both for emerging public policy and for theorists concerned with the making of public policy.

    Oxford University Press, USA | 2005-09-15 | ISBN: 0199244278 | 400 pages | PDF | 8 MB

This is the first single-author study in over fifty years to offer an integrated appraisal of the early Middle Ages as a dynamic and formative period in European history. Written in an attractive and accessible style, it makes extensive use of original sources to introduce early medieval men and women at all levels of society from slave to emperor, and allows them to speak to the reader in their own words. It overturns traditional narratives and instead offers an entirely fresh approach to the centuries from c.500 to c.1000. Rejecting any notion of a dominant, uniform early medieval culture, it argues that the fundamental characteristic of the early middle ages is diversity of experience.

Three of CouchDB's creators show you how to use this document-oriented database as a standalone application framework or with high-volume, distributed applications. With its simple model for storing, processing, and accessing data, CouchDB is ideal for web applications that handle huge amounts of loosely structured data. That alone would stretch the limits of a relational database, yet CouchDB offers an open source solution that's reliable, scales easily, and responds quickly.

Belief Revision (Cambridge Tracts in Theoretical Computer Science)
    Cambridge University Press | 1992 | ISBN: 0521545641 | 284 pages | PDF | 6 MB

Belief revision is a topic of much interest in theoretical computer science and logic, and it forms a central problem in research into artificial intelligence. In simplest terms it addresses the problem of updating a database of knowledge in the light of new information and what to do in the case where new information is in conflict with something that was previously held to be true.

    Cambridge University Press | 1992-06-26 | ISBN: 0521419328 | 280 pages | DJVU | 2 MB

This book develops the theory of typed feature structures, a new form of data structure that generalizes both the first-order terms of logic programs and feature-structures of unification-based grammars to include inheritance, typing, inequality, cycles and intensionality. It presents a synthesis of many existing ideas into a uniform framework, which serves as a logical foundation for grammars, logic programming and constraint-based reasoning systems. Throughout the text, a logical perspective is adopted that employs an attribute-value description language along with complete equational axiomatizations of the various systems of feature structures.

Predicate Transformer Semantics (Cambridge Tracts in Theoretical Computer Science)
    Cambridge University Press | 1992-08-28 | ISBN: 0521420369 | 233 pages | DJVU | 2 MB

This book presents a rigorous foundation for defining Boolean categories, in which the relationship between specification and behavior is explored. Boolean categories provide a rich interface between program constructs and techniques familiar from algebra, for instance matrix- or ideal-theoretic methods. The book's distinction is that the approach relies on a single program construct (the first-order theory of categories); others are derived mathematically from four axioms. Development of these axioms (which are obeyed by an abundance of program paradigms) yields Boolean algebras of "predicates" loop-free constructs, and a calculus of partial and total correctness, which is shown to be the standard one of Hoare, Dijkstra, Pratt, and Kozen.

Formal Specification and Design (Cambridge Tracts in Theoretical Computer Science)
    Cambridge University Press | 1992-10-30 | ISBN: 0521434572 | 351 pages | DJVU | 2 MB

In this book the authors describe algebraic and state-based specification techniques from the unified view of the Common Object-oriented Language for Design, COLD, a wide-spectrum language in the tradition of VDM and Z. The kernel language is explained in detail, with many examples, including: set representation, a display device, an INGRES-like database system, and a line editor. Fundamental techniques such as initial algebra semantics, loose semantics, partial functions, hiding, sharing, predicate and dynamic logic, abstraction functions, representation of invariants, and black-box correctness are also presented.

    Cambridge University Press | 1992-10-30 | ISBN: 0521417236 | 285 pages | PDF | 7 MB

In this book, the author develops deduction-oriented methods for reasoning about functional and logic programs. The methods are based on the inductive theories of suitable data type specifications and exploit both classical theorem-proving and term rewriting. Detailed examples accompany the development of the methods, and their use is supported by a prototyping system that is documented at the end of the book.

    Cambridge University Press | 1991-01-25 | ISBN: 0521366313 | 448 pages | PDF | 8 MB

This book discusses recent research in the theoretical foundations of several subjects of importance for the design of hardware, and for computer science in general. The physical technologies of very large scale integration (VLSI) are having major effects on the electronic industry. The potential diversity and complexity of digital systems have begun a revolution in the technologies of digital design, involving the application of concepts and methods to do with algorithms and programming. In return, the problems of VLSI design have led to new subjects becoming of importance in computer science.
