    Per Mandel’štam, il viaggio in Armenia, che durò per qualche mese del 1930, fu una discesa «negli stadi abissali del linguaggio»; là dove «vedere, udire, capire – tutti questi significati, un tempo, confluivano in un unico fascio semantico». Così, in queste pagine, che si presentano con la sprezzatura di una stenografia diaristica, assistiamo al prodigio della continua geminazione delle immagini, a un ultimo convito dell’analogia, prima che il «nero velluto della notte sovietica» inghiotta il poeta. L’Armenia, «regno di pietre urlanti», divenne per lui il luogo di una primordiale fusione geologica fra il mondo cristiano-giudaico e quello ellenico, come dire fra le due lingue della sua poesia.
