Although it went virtually unnoticed upon its initial release in 1983, this intriguing record momentarily put a halt to Johnny Cash's precipitous artistic decline and kept the promise of his resurgence alive. Recorded in Los Angeles with session men including Marty Stuart, Norton Buffalo, Jo-El Sonnier, and producer Brian Ahern, Johnny 99 focuses on the work of younger songwriters–Bruce Springsteen, Paul Kennerley, Guy Clark–and might be the lone oasis in an otherwise barren decade.

If Out Among the Stars had come out when its sessions were completed, it would've appeared sometime in 1984, arriving between 1983's flinty Johnny 99 and 1985's slippery, sentimental Rainbow. Allegedly, this album – discovered by Legacy and John Carter Cash during some archival work in 2012 – was shelved because its Billy Sherrill production was just a little bit too pop for Johnny Cash's taste, but that reasoning isn't sound, particularly with the Chips Moman-produced crossover of sugar of Rainbow taken into consideration.

Naomi Shelton and The Gospel Queens are the latest offering from the Daptone Records revival machine that consistently keeps on delivering on quality with every artist and every album. Following hot on the heels of Charles Bradley's phenomenal success this chunk of retro soul is clearly aimed to put a female old school soul artist up there along side the old school funk of Sharon Jones. If you liked the recent bluesy, gospel albums by Mavis Staples then this album should hit the spot. Ms. Shelton is ably backed by a traditional basic gospel style band with the Gospel Queens adding sweet harmonies to the gospel tinged soul proceedings. The old fashioned album cover suitably reflects the contents of the album.

One of country music's unequivocal stars, Johnny Cash retained respect for the travails of the audience elevating him to that position. Recorded live at one of America's most notorious prisons, this album displays an empathy bereft of condescension and captures a performer combining charisma with natural ease. The material is balanced between established favorites and new material including "Wanted Man" (an unrecorded Bob Dylan song), and the lighthearted hit "A Boy Named Sue." It was not the first time Cash had recorded in a penal institution, but this appearance, at a time when American values were vociferously questioned, suggested the artist's rebelliousness had not dimmed.

Shamelessly enamored of The Beatles, Oasis uses „Be Here Now“ to serve up another heaping platter of larger-than-life rock and roll garnished with Fab Fourisms. Noel Gallagher's ambitious songwriting and production (which, not coincidentally, was done at Abbey Road) result in an average song length of almost six minutes and the full, gnarly guitar sound that's become Oasis' trademark. "Magic Pie" and "All Around The World" incorporate brassy orchestration reminiscent of "Let It Be," while the former's name seems a less-than-subtle nod to Macca's „Flaming Pie“ album released a few months prior.
