‘Atlantic Oscillations’ marks the return of world-renowned British producer Quantic with his most cohesive and intricate album to date. Bringing together new players and concepts with a dance orientated sound that has enchanted fans and tastemakers across the world for nearly two decades, it showcases Will “Quantic” Holland’s artistry and rare ability to intertwine the electronic with the orchestral.

The two albums OC19040B and OC19041B introduce Beethoven’s more intimate works that appropriately trace his evolution: from the four Sonatinas, WoO 50 and 51, Anh. 5/1, 5/2, composed in the late 1780s or early 1790s and published posthumously; exploring the four sonatas of the first-period (the Three Sonatas, Op. 10 and the Sonata, Op. 22); two sonatas from the middle period (Opp. 78, in two relatively brief movements; and Op. 79, the shortest of the three-movement sonatas); and ending with the late-period’s Eleven Bagatelles, Op. 119, revised and published as a set in 1823 but gathering works that span from the 1790s to the early 1820s.

Nowadays, barely a little over 70 years later, hardly anybody in the younger generation can imagine that such a catastrophe is possible or could be possible again. On the basis of three violin concertos by Bartók, Hartmann and Walton, which were created this year, these moods of the various composers should be audible on a CD together with the Munich Symphony Orchestra as well as a kind of time machine. The album of the violinist Fabiola Kim under the direction of Kevin John Edusei will be released in June 2019.

Diana Boyle is a fine pianist who records little but prepares each recording with years of thought, consideration and meditation on the music. Her interpretations are individual and thought-provoking, often delicate, not always conforming to the norm which pianists of lesser talent will follow, but looking to breathe new life and spirit into classic masterpieces. Her previous Divine Art albums have been very popular and highly praised. Like all of Boyles work these new recordings are very carefully prepared and well crafted performances which do not fear to display real feeling and depth, not at all like the all too common mechanical performances of Baroque music. The works themselves are not all among Bachs best known, but all display his total mastery of the art of composition.

During the last two decades of the nineteenth century, the generation of Danish composers born in the 1860s started to make an impact. Among them, Fini Henriques, who had a special gift for beautiful, well-shaped melodies, and his popularity rested firmly on a generous output of single pieces, usually strung together in collections such as those presented here by Christina Bjørkøe. Billedbogen (The Picture Book) is a collection for children and proved one of his absolute bull’s eyes, whereas Erotik (Eroticism) and Melodiske profiler (Silhouettes) see the composer exploring the world of adult life. Henriques’s best works maintain a high level with their honesty and that brilliant touch which few of his contemporaries could rival.

Three composers, two performers and centre stage a young, and sometimes sensitive protagonist. Baritone Ludwig Mittelhammer and pianist Jonathan Ware interpret songs by Franz Schubert, Hugo Wolf and Nikolai Medtner. This is the debut album of a young singer of whom great things are expected.

Around the father of European music are summoned by famous and more discreet contemporaries, all authors of concertos, such as Telemann, Fasch and Förster. Enlightened by the miraculous southern light emanating from the works of German Baroque pieces, the album vibrates thanks to the obvious pleasure of the musicians to play once more together at Aparté’s.

A composer admired by his contemporaries, Josquin Desprez (ca 1450-1521) was a solitary artist who sublimated in his chansons the melancholy character and the elegance emblematic of the Renaissance. For their first recording, Dulces Exuviae explore the intimacy of these chansons in a fresh light: the sweet melodies are embellished by ornaments and accompanied on the lute, leaving ample room for improvisation, and thus allowing music to come out all the more alive, delicate and filled with emotion.

Metier Records, the new-music label of Divine Art Recordings Group, has a fascinating new recording bringing together music by Robert Schumann and Tristan Murail. The album, to be released in June 2019, will be titled ‘Une rencontre’ (‘An encounter’) and is a meeting of Romantic and contemporary music, climaxed by the premiere recording of Murail’s ‘revisit’ to Schumann’s Kinderszenen, a transcription written especially for the cello soloist Marie Ythier.

Seven Days Walking’: seven bodies of music to be released over seven consecutive months. The first, ‘Seven Days Walking: Day One’, which interweaves piano and strings in his unmistakable style, is Einaudi’s 14th studio album and will be released on 15th March, on Decca.

During the current decade Cologne-based saxophonist Angelika Niescier has made her connection to New York's elite improvisational jazz community readily clear. Her trio CD The Berlin Concert, was voted one of the most important releases of 2018 by Downbeat.

31-year-old pianist Yves Theiler is one of the most significant voices in international contemporary jazz in Europe. Deeply rooted in the tradition of jazz and equipped with a daring desire to experiment, he distinguishes himself as a composer as well as a free improviser with a sovereign creative will. At the centre of his musical work is the Yves Theiler Trio, which reveres an urgent ensemble music in which improvisational furor and compositional rigour, calculation and freedom intertwine.

By choosing to combine for this recording two complementary but distinctly different drone-based, immersive pieces by the legendary veteran composer and artist/film-maker Phill Niblock (born 1933, USA), and the younger, Berlin-based composer/violist Catherine Lamb (born 1982, USA), Norway’s Ensemble neoN creates a perfect sense of aesthetic balance. Loud is followed by quiet; what seems like random patterning gives way to orderly design; and the opening instrumental ensemble-setting is transformed by the subsequent addition of guest voices. Listening to both pieces one after another is like experiencing thesis and anti-thesis through the medium of Side A and Side B.
