James Ehnes has previously explored Béla Bartók’s concertos for violin and for viola, to great acclaim. This disc is the second in his equally successful survey of Bartók’s chamber music for the violin. His accompanist, once more, is Andrew Armstrong, a pianist praised by critics for his passionate expression and dazzling technique.

A key figure in the development of jazz's new direction in the late '60s and '70s (thanks in large part to his contributions to Miles Davis' pioneering fusion work), Chick Corea has since become one of the most influential musicians of the genre. The tracks on EARLY DAYS were recorded in 1969. Around the same time, the Davis Quintet was recording the epochal IN A SILENT WAY and BITCHES BREW. The material here, featuring sidemen Woody Shaw, Jack De Johnette, and Bennie Maupin, explores similarly abstract rhythmic excursions that favor texture and atmosphere over conventional song structure.

Miles Davis and storied producer/arranger Quincy Jones shared a long friendship and working history, despite the jazz trumpeter's legendary reputation as an intimidating and difficult collaborator. Their last partnership comes to light Tuesday in Miles Davis With Quincy Jones and the Gil Evans Orchestra Live at Montreux 1991, a concert from the Montreux Jazz Festival captured shortly before Davis died. Evans died in 1988.

The Final Cut extends the autobiography of The Wall, concentrating on Roger Waters' pain when his father died in World War II. Waters spins this off into a treatise on the futility of war, concentrating on the Falkland Islands, setting his blistering condemnations and scathing anger to impossibly subdued music that demands full attention. This is more like a novel than a record, requiring total concentration since shifts in dynamics, orchestration, and instrumentation are used as effect.

Despite having planned his career meticulously over the past 25 years or so, even in the camp of German hard rock master Axel Rudi Pell surprises cannot be ruled out: Before playing in front of a sold-out Cologne crowd on the second leg of his wildly successful "Circle Of The Oath" tour, the opportunity arose for taping the whole show, with cameras being all over. Well, Axel gave it a try. And that was a good move. Ten years after his last live album "Knights Live" (2002), you can — again — be a witness of a complete concert from the Bochum-based guitar virtuoso and his German-American all-star band. To round out the Axel Rudi Pell live package, the recording of the co-headlining gig at last year's Rock Of Ages festival was added to "Live On Fire", the name of his newest live oeuvre.

One of this year's most interesting releases in female vocal jazz comes from France and is actually called 'Nebula', I'm not sure why this is listed as 'Nebra'. This is Laika Fatien's(born in Paris of an Ivory Coast father and a Moroccan-Spanish mother) 3rd album. Eleven tracks of Classic Jazz (from Monk, Jackie Mc Lean, Tina Brooks, Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter to Stevie Wonder and even Bjork) which sounds fresh and modern, a great merit of the producer (and also bassist-what a great work he does on Mingus's 'Make Believe') - Meschell Ndegeocello.

Acclaimed tango and world fusion accordionist Richard Galliano headlines this 2009 performance film, in a trio that also includes double bassist Jean-Philippe Viret and Jean-Marie Ecay. Featured selections include: " Sertao," " Waltz for Nicky," "Spleen" and "Libertango." Accordionist Richard Galliano did for European folk specifically, the early-20th-century French ballroom dance form known as musette what his mentor Astor Piazzolla did for the Argentinean tango. Galliano re-imagined and revitalized a musical tradition, expanding its emotional range to reflect modern sensibilities, and opening it up to improvisation learned through American jazz.

The pop superstar captured live in performance at London's O2 Arena. The tour, in support of Rihanna's fifth studio album 'Loud' (2010), featured an elaborate stage show and saw the singer perform hits including 'Only Girl (in the World)', 'California King Bed', 'Umbrella' and 'We Found Love'.
Rihanna established her dance-pop credentials in summer 2005 with her debut smash hit, "Pon de Replay," and continued to demonstrate hit potential in subsequent years (e.g., "S.O.S." in 2006; "Umbrella" in 2007; "Disturbia" in 2008).
