Gold In The Attic is the fourth electronic longplayer under the name Jean F. Cochois (on the first two albums just as JFC) and created a unique niche suited in the wide field of the genre Ambient/Electronic for his selection. His former releases - remixes for Enigma or Ex-Kraftwerk producer Wolfgang Flür (Yamo) amongst others - stand for new devised cliches and love for the music that lives in the details. 15 songs of an artist who walks his own ways with emotional denseness and expertly flair as regards sound and rhythm.

As one of the most popular pop groups of the 1970s, brother-and-sister duo the Carpenters (Richard and Karen Carpenter) enjoyed a string of era-defining hits, among them "We've Only Just Begun" and "Close to You." In time, however, the demands of fame and image exacted a tragic cost as both siblings allegedly struggled with drug addiction, and Karen developed the anorexia nervosa that eventually claimed her life in February 1983.

Memory Garden was formed in December 1992. They began their career with demo and EP releases which gained the interest of the small Swedish label, Heathendoom Music, who gave them the opportunity to release the MCD called "Forever" in 1995 and their first full-length album "Tides" in 1996. Both were recorded at Fredman Studios with Fredrik Norman and were very well received among fans and press in Europe. Excellent guitar harmonies and the classic clean vocals of Stefan Berglund are the outstanding trademarks of this highly talented outfit.

Classic performances by Ella Fitzgerald, the queen of the jazz/soul singers backed up by one of the biggest of the big band leaders, Count Basie, and his illustrious orchestra.
"The First Lady of Song," Ella Fitzgerald was arguably the finest female jazz singer of all time (although some may vote for Sarah Vaughan or Billie Holiday). Blessed with a beautiful voice and a wide range, Fitzgerald could outswing anyone, was a brilliant scat singer, and had near-perfect elocution; one could always understand the words she sang. The one fault was that, since she always sounded so happy to be singing, Fitzgerald did not always dig below the surface of the lyrics she interpreted and she even made a downbeat song such as "Love for Sale" sound joyous.

Doug MacLeod's dark singing and sparse guitar playing are a throwback to the country-blues artists of the 1930s, although his lyrics have more modern sensibilities. Much of this superior CD is haunting and mildly disturbing, giving one the feeling that there is a great deal beneath the surface….

Doug MacLeod displays several sides of his artistry on this AudioQuest CD. His music ranges from solo folk numbers in the idiom of Leadbelly (but covering different subjects) to country blues with a trio, a few romps with the wailing harmonica of Carey Bell and two collaborations with the country fiddle of Heather Hardy. MacLeod's appealing voice is easy to understand, his lyrics are thoughtful and fresh (even when covering universal subjects) and his melodic guitar playing is versatile. MacLeod's well-conceived set should appeal to collectors of acoustic blues and folk music.–by Scott Yanow
