Bodies of the church of St. Wawrzyńca w Wołowie (1715-1717), come from a workshop, one of the greatest Silesian builders Adam Horatio Casparini. Contemporary disposition, slightly modified in the nineteenth century, does not differ much from the Casparini concept. The instrument still meets the requirements of very orthodox baroque literature, including the works of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Asked the question ‘How many sonatas for violin and piano did Johannes Brahms compose?’, many lovers of chamber music would probably answer three, and maybe also add their respective keys and opus numbers. When pressed, a number of them would also remember the so-called F.A.E. Sonata, a collaborative effort by the young Brahms, Albert Dietrich and their mentor Robert Schumann. But very few would probably think of the two Opus 120 sonatas, composed in 1894 for clarinet (or viola) and piano, but a year later published in the composer’s own version for the violin. As the range of the B flat clarinet goes a fourth lower than that of the violin, Brahms had been forced to make considerable revisions to the clarinet part – which in turned entailed changes in the piano part, and consequently the printing of a new piano score. The seasoned team of violinist Ulf Wallin and pianist Roland Pöntinen have now decided to record all the Brahms sonatas, and the results are being released on two albums, the first one including the first of the ‘official’ sonatas, No. 1 in G major, Op. 78, the F minor Sonata from Op. 120 and Brahms’s Scherzo from the F.A.E. Sonata. Wallin and Pöntinen round off the programme with transcriptions of two of Brahms’s more lyrical songs.

With lutenist Lukas Henning, Glossa unveils a striking new talent as he presents Bella incognita, a recital devoted to the enigmatic 16th-century Venetian composer Marco dall’Aquila, a musician frequently referred to in the sources but one who is difficult to characterize. With the increased use of the six-course instrument, writing for the lute became more polyphonic, with a greater level of complexity and frequently making use of existing musical works such as the chanson Il est bel et bon by Pierre Passereau; the system – called tablature – of graphically representing this complexity was introduced as the 16th century commenced.

Trombonist/arranger Slide Hampton pays tribute to the recently deceased Dizzy Gillespie during a collection mostly consisting of Dizzy's compositions. Hampton utilizes "The Jazz Masters," an all-star medium-size group also including trumpeters Jon Faddis, Roy Hargrove and Claudio Roditi, himself and Steve Turre on trombones, bass trombonist Douglas Purviance, the reeds of David Sanchez, Antonio Hart and Jimmy Heath, pianist Danilo Perez, bassist George Mraz and drummer Lewis Nash. Although there is a certain amount of predictability in their treatments of such tunes as "Bebop," "Tour De Force" and "A Night In Tunisia" (and "Overture" after a few song quotes becomes "Blue & Boogie"), the remarkable lineup of musicians cannot be passed over lightly.

This record is the result of a recent compositional research that has also developed in the concert activity of the quintet. This is a rereading of the ideas of the Swiss composer and theorist, American naturalist, Ernst Levy in the field of musical theory and negative or "absolute" harmony. Levy provided a new interpretation of our tonal system from Zarlino to the present, arranging some theoretical misunderstandings left unresolved in five centuries of music. Levy's is a "reform" from the inside that reaches, and exceeds, the boundaries of the tonality following the structure of the physical sound - the natural harmonics - and of the inner sound - the lower harmonics.

Where the typical ECM continental European chamber sound has been associated with Norwegian pianist Christian Wallumrod, Fabula Suite Lugano adds a new, expansive flavor to what might be expected. This rather ambitious program features a core ensemble, but the sounds are bigger or smaller depending on the inspiration or thematic concept. At the center of many tracks is the violin and viola of Gjermund Larsen and cellist Tanja Orning, but the Baroque harp, as played by Giovanna Pessi, adds more bright colors, while the lone horn (trumpet) of Eivind Lonnig completes the cycle of mystery to this spatial, in-the-main haunting music.

Originating as a sexy South American dance, the chaconne crossed the Atlantic to sixteenth-century Spain, where it acquired a reputation as a dangerous pleasure. Constructed on repeating ground basses, the form’s sinuous flexibility articulated two facets of the modernist urge to self-expression: the boisterous delights of turning the world upside down and the sweet sadness of melancholy introspection.

"I don't know what the next record will be," Josef Zawinul said in the summer of 1972, "but it'll be something else! We've been learning every night, and we're still growing."Indeed, Sweetnighter was something else. Zawinul began to assert greater control of band, steering it away from the collective improvisation that marked its live performances toward more structured compositions emphasizing funk and groove. This was exemplified by the album's two dominant tracks, "Boogie Woogie Waltz" and "125th Street Congress," as well as the album closer, "Non-Stop Home." Other tracks were reminiscent of Weather Report's previous albums, making Sweetnighter a transition from the band's first phase to what one might call its mature phase.

Composed in Russia between 1884 and 1917, the four works appearing on this disc all do so in some kind of disguise. Prokofiev and Scriabin both conceived their respective collections for the piano, and it is later arrangers that have adapted them for string orchestra. Rudolf Barshai took on Prokofiev’s Visions Fugitives in 1962, selecting 15 of the 20 brief pieces and arranging them for his own ensemble, the Moscow Chamber Orchestra. Scriabin’s Preludes received a similar treatment in 1999 when the Finnish composer Jouni Kaipainen chose 13 from the original 24, rearranging the order they appear in and transposing them in some cases. As for Anton Arensky (1861—1909), he composed his set of variations as the third movement of a string quartet, taking the theme from a song by Tchaikovsky and letting it undergo a series of transformations.
