In hot pursuit of Skepta’s symbolic Mercury prize victory, it seems like an entire generation has fallen at grime’s feet and 2016 saw the genre continue its meteoric rise to the mainstream. From its early origins in East London council estates in the early noughties until today’s global recognition, grime’s distinct characteristic lays in its ability to stay loyal to its roots and give back to the community.
