Randy, barman de profession, mène une petite vie bien tranquille. Ce bonheur pourrait être parfait s'il ne lui manquait une femme dans son existence. Une nuit sur son parking, il rencontre la belle et envoûtante Jewel, dont il tombe fou amoureux. Mais c'est aussi le début des ennuis et bien vite la passion se transforme en cauchemar. Car ce sont trois hommes que Jewel va rendre dingues, s'installant avec l'un, faisant oublier à sa condition d'homme marié à l'autre, et au troisième qu'il est veuf. C'est ainsi que Randy envisage de faire appel à Mr Burmeister, tueur à gages, pour le débarrasser de Jewel.

The title refers to the night when three men, Randy (Matt Dillon), his cousin Carl (Paul Reiser) and Detective Dehling (John Goodman), all meet Jewel Valentine (Liv Tyler) at a bar called McCool's. Actually, they don't so much meet her as fall under her spell when they first lay eyes on her. In her clinging red dress she looks like a cross between a beautiful damsel in distress and the Lady In Red looking for John Dillinger.
