Fred Hersch's 2009 recording, Whirl (Palmetto Records), was where pure magic first occurred in the pianist's extensive and consistently superb discography. That particular outing introduced his now long-standing trio with bassist John Hebert and drummer Eric McPherson. Alive At the Vanguard (2012), Floating (2014), and Sunday Night At The Vanguard (2016) by the group followed, all on Palmetto Records.

When it comes to one-man bands, guitarist and singer extraordinaire Steve Hill has no limits. Anything goes. He is the true exponent of a one-man band. Steve performs standing up while singing and playing guitar, his feet playing bass drum, snare drum, hi-hats and with a drum stick fused to the head of his trusty guitar, any other percussion within reach.

Small town southern guys sure do have a soft spot for their regional homes. Take Brent Cobb. On his previous 2016 album, the onetime Ellaville, Georgia resident sung of a simpler life “South of Atlanta.” On this follow-up to that well received, Grammy-nominated set (produced by his famous cousin Dave Cobb), he again seems to long for the good old days. Stepping outside the boundaries of a concert film or documentary, Plain Spoken blends highly personal voice-overs from Mellencamp with live footage of him performing with his full band at the historic Chicago Theatre, just 250 miles from his native Indiana.

7 features standouts including the Valentine's Day single "Lemon Glow" along with "Black Car," "Drunk In LA," "Dark Spring," and the transcendent "Dive". All of the songs on 7 began in Beach House's home studio in Baltimore, and were finished at Carriage House in Stamford, CT and Palmetto Studio in Los Angeles. The album was mixed by Alan Moulder. Beach House (Alex Scally & Victoria Legrand) released B-sides and Rarities in 2017, which served as a proverbial "cleaning out the closet" to pave the way for a new creative process.
