Waiter, Make Mine Blues is a vocal jazz album by Anita O'Day released in April 1961 on Verve Records. Anita O’Day had many fine groups to back her ever since she began lining out jazz, and this collection, recorded at the peak of her career, is a fine example of this statement, considering she’s accompanied by orchestras arranged and conducted by such talented bandleaders as Bill Holman, and Russ Garcia.

Singer-songwriter Matt Stell, whose single “Prayed for You” is currently climbing charts, has announced details for his new EP. Folk music in Appalachia is usually a family affair, handed down from father to son, mother to daughter, shared via backyard parties, kitchen jam sessions, or old-time fiddler conventions. For breakout Americana star Dori Freeman, this is the world she grew up in, singing old songs with her father Scott Freeman and her grandfather Willard Gayheart. It was in this spirit that all three of them gathered in the frame shop that Willard owns near Galax, Virginia, along with producer Teddy Thompson, New York recording engineer and producer Ed Haber (Linda Thompson, WNYC), and Dori’s husband Nick Falk, to record an album of Willard’s originals and favorite songs.

Granados’s famous opera Goyescas, first performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1916, derives from the piano suite premiered in Paris two years previously. At the head of a BBC SO in top form and a handpicked cast, Josep Pons clearly much enjoyed conducting this sparkling new production in London: many scenes in the opera draw their inspiration directly from paintings by Goya, which listeners will also have the pleasure of finding in the booklet of this rare and precious album.

Schoenberg’s early String Sextet ‘Verkläte Nacht’ (Transfigured Night) op.4 dates from 1899. He made the arrangement for string orchestra in 1943. It is a work heavily indebted to Wagner, and especially ‘Tristan und Isolde’ although the unique voice of Schoenberg is already apparent. ‘Gurrelieder’ and ‘Pelleas und Melisande’ would bring the curtain down on his late romantic period and the daring atonal music that has caused him to remain a musical bogey man for many would follow. Verkläte Nacht is a wonderful, intensely moving work and the ideal introduction to this great composer.

As known, he lost his sight at the age of 7 but, despite his disability, he excelled in the study of music and all liberal arts. Might the condition of blindness have affected the poetic production of Landini? LaReverdie together with Christophe Deslignes, investigate this hypothesis, with a new project that presents both well known masterpieces and pieces never recorded before, searching signs that might be eventually impressed in the verses and the music of Magister Coecus by the loss of his sight.

Despite going into Guy Ritchie‘s Aladdin with almost no hope whatsoever, I ended up being won over by the movie. Fans of the original Aladdin won’t be disappointed, and while I’ve grown to be somewhat cynical about Disney remaking its animated classics, this one justifies its existence by making some interesting updates while staying true to its characters.
