Bach and Handel, they systematically explored contrast and extreme juxtapositions in their compositions. This avant-garde style remained in fashion for only a short period but anticipated many pre-eminent aspects of early romanticism. In this recording a harpsichord concerto by W.F. Bach (J.S. Bach’s eldest son) is combined with two concertos by Bohemian composer G. Benda.

The mandora is a lute instrument that gradually disappeared with the advent of the guitar and has been completely forgotten since around 1820 - until today. The lutenist Jakub Mitrik has set himself the goal of reviving this instrument and its repertoire with this CD.

Mr Takács now joins forces with veteran violinist Daniel Stepner for Beethoven’s final two Violin Sonatas. I’m not sure whether this is the start of a new cycle or a one off. What I am certain of, however, is that Takács is one of the finest Beethoven interpreters around. He seems to have made the composer something of a speciality. Violinist Daniel Stepner, who studied with Steven Staryk in Chicago and Nadia Boulanger in France, is the Artistic Director of the Aston Magna Festival and Foundation. He is also Professor Emeritus at Brandeis University, where he was first violinist of the Lydian String Quartet from 1987-2016.

Recorded amid a rich songwriting vein, just as the Pixies had been placed on hold, Frank Black’s ambitious 22-track album Teenager Of The Year came out in May 1994, just one year after his fantastic self-titled solo debut. Recorded with scene legend Eric Drew Feldman (Captain Beefheart’s Magic Band, Pere Ubu, The Residents) and featuring the single ‘Headache’, Teenager Of The Year is seen by many as his greatest solo work, subsequently appearing in both Pitchfork’s Top 100 Albums of the 1990s poll and the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die book.

Messiaen had a major influence on the Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu(Tokyo, 1930 ibid., 1996). Raised in militaristic Japan during the Second World War (at just 14 years old, in anticipation of an American invasion, he was drafted into the Japanese army), Takemitsu initially had a sort of rejection of the culture and philosophy of his own country and instead showed great interest in the various musical trends of the Western avant-gardes, especially French.The pieces in this recording cover a compositional span of about fifty years.
