What happens when traditional Sami music meets mainstream western sacred music? This is the question Cantus meets head-on in Spes. Under the direction of its conductor Tove Ramlo-Ystad, and in collaboration with composer and musician Frode Fjellheim, the choir explores a new and little-known musical world, a world with a wide range of emotions: sorrow, joy and vulnerability. Through these songs, sounds and musical forms - some familiar, others scarcely known - Cantus challenges both itself and its audience with a repertoire which, while being striking in its variety, is united in one thing: its expression of hope in the music by Frode Fjellheim, Mia Makaroff, Eriks Esenvalds, Eva Ugalde, Ko Matsushita, Knut Nystedt, Franz Xaver Biebl and Kim André Arnesen.

Xhosa Cole is a name that has been bandied about for the best part of a decade now. After winning the BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year in 2018, it felt like everyone was waiting for the contemporary jazz artist to live up to his hype, or implode because of it. With each new album Cole has grown in confidence as a player and songwriter. Now, on his third album – a love letter and reinterpretation of works by musical idol, Thelonious Monk – we’re starting to see the fruition of that praise and work ethic paying off.

Mark Kirschenmann’s Tonics is a collection of seven melodies composed and performed on an acoustic trumpet vibrating with a bamboo mouthpipe, which replaces the traditional mouthpiece. The sound is quiet, flute-like, and delicate, opening new identities for the instrument. The curvaceous modal melodies are interwoven with improvisations that emerge from the melodic sources. The tunes unfold freely out of time and are enhanced by various ensembles of strings, percussion, voices, and prepared piano.

We sought to give this collection of pieces a unique character through the use of instruments, bows, and strings, each corresponding respectively to the practices of the Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary periods. Each work is imbued with a distinct sound, texture, and color. Through these subtle nuances, we offer a musical journey through time centered around the music of three women who, each in their own way, left a mark on their era: Maddalena Laura Lombardini Sirmen, Fanny Hensel Mendelssohn, and Alicia Terzian.

The Kreutzer Quartet has long been at the forefront of contemporary classical music, known for their enduring collaborations with a diverse range of composers. This album, Something So Transporting Bright, exemplifies their deep engagement with composers of multiple generations, from the late Gloria Coates, who began working with the quartet in 1992, to emerging voices like Tom Metcalf and Joel Järventausta, both in their twenties. The four featured works capture a profound sense of artistic exchange, reflecting the quartet’s unique position as both interpreters and collaborators.

This debut album of the young Trio Contrasti takes us on a journey through time with a mosaic of sounds in which epochs and cultures enter into dialogue. Romanticism gave the art world a new paradigm of thought, when music took the leading position among the arts and the freedom of formal design, initiated by the content, unfolded. The quest for national self-identification and the rapid development of national styles in art began. Romanticism opened the way for a dialogue between epochs and cultures that continued into the 20th century. Three works that have no direct connection to each other nevertheless share a common context. When viewed through the prism of a Romantic paradigm, they can be seen as milestones on the path through epochs and cultures.

Most of the chamber music of Robert Simpson (1921-97) was recorded by Hyperion in the 1980s and '90s, but there remained some gaps in that discography. The Robert Simpson Society has sponsored two albums to plug them, this first one including an early string quartet and two songs that came to light only after the composer's death. In later life Simpson used to say that poems good enough to set to music didn't need it - but these two youthful essays prove that he was already a master. Simpson wrote the D major string quartet as a student at Durham; an examiner described it as 'fearless'. The two mature works - vintage Simpson - bring his sense of symphonic momentum into the clarinet repertoire.
