The roots of Electric lay in another album entirely, Peace, which was recorded with Love producer Steve Brown in a series of sessions that the band found increasingly pressure-filled and fraught with tension. A chance meeting with Def Jam supremo Rick Rubin at an American awards ceremony turned out to be the charm, resulting in the saucy chest-baring stomp of Electric.

It’s because he has devoted his life to finding new ways to express improvised melodic conceptualizations, because his harmonic language continues to evolve and develop, and because he has found new means for elaborating on and breaking through rhythmic patterns. But mostly, because Lovano continues to practice and develop his instrumental technique, as well as develop his art in a ceaseless drive to find musical meaning in an ever evolving musical world. Terry Evans' second solo release (after a few with his singing partner Bobby King) further explores his swampy gospel, rock, R&B, and blues roots. Backed by veteran musicians like former employer Ry Cooder, bassist/songwriter Jorge Calderon, and even legendary jazz/funk trombonist George Bohanon (who tears it up with his solo on the album-closing slow groove of "Blues No More"), Evans proves that he's one of the most underrated vocalists on the blues/roots scene. ~ AllMusic

Billy Corgan has emerged from his three-year hiatus following The Smashing Pumpkins' 2000 break-up, with Zwan and their debut, MARY STAR OF THE SEA. Rounding out the group are former Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlain, Slint/Tortoise guitarist Dave Pajo, Skunk string-slinger Matt Sweeney and bassist from A Perfect Circle, Paz Lenchantin. Corgan does not disappoint as he resurrects the crashing guitars and yowling vocals that ensnared so many young, impressionable post-rock fans. Taking on the moniker of Billy Burke, a Florida evangelist dedicated to "touching the world with God's power," the Chicago native runs a quasi-religious thread through these 14 songs.

Sure, the serious jazz collector will have no particular need to pay this release any mind. It has eight 1956-1967 Davis ballads, encompassing "'Round Midnight," orchestrated pieces with Gil Evans, and tracks with stellar sidemen like John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Ron Carter, Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams, and Herbie Hancock. The selections are ones that highlight Davis' more sultry and melancholy horn tones, played on the trumpet with the exception of "Blues for Pablo" on which he plays flügelhorn. ~ AllMusic
