The three eloquent movements of Rebecca Clarke's Piano Trio are ingeniously linked through the use of a repeated-note motto theme suggested at once in the piano and soon after delivered by the cello. ‘Lullaby’ (1918) is the first of two pieces for viola (or violin) and cello. The melody is set to a simple rocking bass. In ‘Midsummer Moon’ (1924), as in the Piano Trio, the harmony hovers on the edge of Scriabin’s mystic chord, but the piano has a second theme distinctly suggestive of English folksong.

Bacwicz'Violin Sonata No. 4 had a succesful United States premiere in 1953. The dialogue bewteen the instruments and in particular the shifting of themes (folf and non-folk alike) from violin to piano evident in this sonata distinguishes her other compositions with an interplay between groups of instruments.Throughout, this Sonata contrasts controlled romanticsim in a neoclassical framework with her signature: pulsating, forceful, driving rythms.

"ALT" is no ordinary Van Der Graaf Generator album (if the term "ordinary" could ever be applied to this visionary group). PETER HAMMILL explains; "Instrumental Improvs & Experiments - Most of the music on "ALT" was made while we weren't really looking, or perhaps only while the left side of our collective brain was engaged. The album is a mixture of improvisations recorded at sound checks and in the studio and more considered sonic creations which often verge on Musique Concrete. The thirteen pieces here offer a fascinating glimpse into an alternative Van der Graaf Generator sound world. Perhaps the closest comparison would be with the second CD of "Present", but even the link with those recordings is tenuous. Even by Van der Graaf Generator standards, this stuff's at the whacky end of the scale!"

Kråke have chosen to play with the big boys by entering the symphonic black metal arena. With the likes of Vesania‘s Distractive Killusions, Cradle of Filth‘s Cruelty and the Beast and Graveworm‘s Fragments of Death already high up on my playlist, Kråke have their work cut out for them. Kråke consists of founding members Dreugh and Beist, two brothers from Kopervik on the west coast of Norway and they liken elements of their début offering to Dimmu Borgir, Old Man’s Child, Bal-Sagoth and Type O Negative.

A new band project brings together some of the finest talent from the European blues scene. The Motives draw their musical inspiration from 40s New York, 50s Chicago and 60s London, combining Matt Taylor's electrifying guitar work with Jonny Dyke's virtuoso hammond and piano over a rock solid rhythm section of Roy Martin on drums and Andy Graham on Bass. Their debut album is released in June 2012.

…Nevertheless, its cavalcade of contradictory moods has its own coherence, and is more musical than most pop music soundtracks. Plus, this has no familiar material, nor does it have anything that would be a single on Clear Channel, which is why it works as an album of its own – it doesn't just reflect the movie; it follows its own logic, and displays fearless imagination. It makes you hungry for Vol. 2, both the movie and soundtrack.

Australia's Midnight Oil brought a new sense of political and social immediacy to pop music: not only did incendiary hits like "Beds Are Burning" and "Blue Sky Mine" bring global attention to the plight of, respectively, aboriginal settlers and impoverished workers, but the group also put its money where its mouth was – in addition to mounting benefit performances for groups like Greenpeace and Save the Whales, frontman Peter Garrett even ran for the Australian Senate on the Nuclear Disarmament Party ticket.
