Equal parts blue-eyed soul shouter and wild-eyed poet-sorcerer, Van Morrison is among popular music's true innovators, a restless seeker whose incantatory vocals and alchemical fusion of R&B, jazz, blues, and Celtic folk produced what is regarded as perhaps the most spiritually transcendent body of work in the rock & roll canon. Having penned iconic songs such as "Gloria," "Brown-Eyed Girl," and "Moondance," Morrison has, from the very beginning – as frontman for Irish blues rockers Them during the early 1960s to a solo career that has lasted more than 50 years – been subject only to the whims of his own muse.

The Who One of the major bands of the rock & roll era, the Who straddle the gap separating art-pop and hard-rock, creating kinetic, exploratory music that helped expand the genre's lexicon. Arriving during the second wave of the British Invasion, the Who came out of the R&B-besotted Mod scene and married that groove to the crunching power chords pioneered by the Kinks. After their debut single "I Can't Explain" cracked the U.K. Top Ten in 1965, the band quickly gained a reputation for their volcanic live performances, which could escalate into Pete Townshend violently shattering his guitar while Keith Moon destroyed his drum kit with glee.

Goose Fusing electro, punk, indie pop, and glam rock, Goose is a Belgian quartet with a muscular, danceable sound. Debuting with the electro-charged Bring It On in 2006, they embraced vintage synth-disco with 2010's Synrise and went in more of a coldwave/industrial direction with 2022's Endless.Lead vocalist Mickael Karkousse, guitarist Dave Martijn, bassist Tom Coghe, and drummer Bert Libeert formed Goose in Kortrijk in 2000. Initially an AC/DC covers band, they won the Humo's Rock Rally contest in 2002 with their own material, and after their debut single, "Audience," was chosen as the soundtrack to a European Coca-Cola advert, they signed with Skint Records. Following the release of their 2006 debut album, Bring It On, they won Best National Alternative Act at the TMF Awards; had their music featured on the likes of Dirty Sexy Money, CSI, and Chuck; and gained critical acclaim with 2010's Synrise and 2012's Control Control Control. Goose returned in 2016 with What You Need and an accompanying film of the same name by Willy Vanderperre. Nonstop, recorded live at the Pukkelpop festival, appeared in 2018. A few singles were released over the following years, appearing on 2021's Something New with remixes. Drifting away from the band's earlier dance-punk sound, the darker, more atmospheric Endless was released in 2022.

The first major Pete Townshend compilation since 1996's awkwardly titled The Best of Pete Townshend: Coolwalkingsmoothtalkingstraightsmokingfirestoking, Truancy covers the basics. It has the hits "Let My Love Open the Door," "Rough Boys," and "Face the Face" – but it attempts to be a concise portrait of every aspect of Townshend's solo work, containing three cuts apiece from Who Came First and Rough Mix, which is more than the two each from Empty Glass, All the Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes, and White City. This creates some notable absences – no "A Little Is Enough," no "Slit Skirts," no "Give Blood" or "A Friend Is a Friend" – but the overall effect showcases Townshend's ever-churning imagination, particularly because the collection ends with two new songs, the blues "Guantanamo" and the near-Chinese Eyes throwback "How Can I Help You," both good enough to spark hope that he'll finally get around to writing another full album, either for himself or for the Who, one of these days.
