Au cours de la nuit, un coup de feu retentit ! Pierre (Jean-Pierre Aumont) et sa jeune compagne (Annabella) ont tenté de se suicider. Renée est blessée tandis que le jeune homme, incrédule, décide de prendre la fuite… Après avoir été soignée, Renée est hébergée par les hôteliers qui lui proposent un emploi de serveuse. Dès lors, son destin se mêlera à celui des clients de l’hôtel et notamment à ce couple étrange et haut en couleurs formé par Monsieur Edmond (Louis Jouvet) et Raymonde (Arletty)…
