    Michel Berthier, cadre commercial - "dans le matelas depuis dix ans" - ne peut se résigner à avouer à Juliette qu'il a été licencié. Mais après avoir donné le change pendant plusieurs mois, le quadragénaire craque devant celle qu'il a mis trois ans à séduire et quitte le pavillon de Gif-sur-Yvette. En quelques heures d'errances parisiennes il se fait voler la totalité de ses biens, mettre sa voiture en fourrière et casser son autoradio. C'est dans les sanitaires de la gare de l'Est qu'il rencontre trois marginaux que les hasards de la vie ont réunis. Michel découragé et affamé rejoint ce petit groupe mené tambour battant par cet ancien brancardier élevé au rang de Toubib par deux de ses patients reconnaissants, Crayon et Mimosa. A la limite de la clochardisation, mais excessivement débrouillards, ils profitent des anciennes fonctions de Michel pour aller dérober des duvets et des lits. Leur dernière expédition, destinée à meubler des sous-sols pour travailleurs immigrés, tourne mal. Michel est reconnu par son ancien collègue qui le laisse filer, mais Crayon est arrêté. Quelques jours plus tard c'est Mimosa qui a maille à partir avec la force publique et y laisse la vie. Le Toubib et Michel se retrouvent seuls. Pas pour très longtemps puisque Crayon, momentanément gardien de nuit dans une tour de La Défense, refait surface. Poussé par le Toubib, et ayant le sentiment d'avoir touché le fond, Michel décide de retrouver Juliette. Celle-ci l'attendait depuis de longs mois…
