    A Saïgon, en 1951, on retrouve le corps d'un représentant de commerce américain, Stephen Pyle. L'enquête amène le commissaire Vigot à rencontrer un journaliste britannique, Thomas Fowler. Quelques mois avant sa mort, Pyle avait fait sa connaissance et était tombé amoureux de Phuong, la maîtresse du journaliste. Déçue par les mensonges de Fowler, qui n'a jamais quitté sa femme, Phuong avait décidé de rompre. Vexé, jaloux, le journaliste délaissé entamait alors une enquête sur l'Américain.
