    L'histoire se déroule dans le Japon médiéval (ère Muromachi). Ashitaka, un jeune guerrier de la tribu des Emishis, est frappé d'une malédiction après avoir tué un sanglier devenu démon. Les sages du village le disent condamné à devenir lui-même un démon. Il va donc partir à la recherche de l'origine des malheurs qui frappent le monde et de sa malédiction, et se retrouvera mêlé à une guerre entre les dieux, protégeant la forêt et la nature, et les hommes qui veulent étendre leur civilisation. Comme à son habitude, Hayao Miyazaki apporte à l'animation et aux décors un soin extrême. La féerie engendrée par ces décors, l'image et la musique est omniprésente. Dans ce film, on retrouve l'une des principales préoccupations de Hayao Miyazaki : la défense de la nature, mais aussi la dénonciation de la guerre, l'importance de la vie, la tolérance.
