1850. La ruée vers l'or en Californie. Ben Rumson, un bagarreur alcoolique, sauve la vie de Pardner, un jeune fermier romantique. La découverte d'un filon lie les deux hommes, qui s'associent. Une ville - à la population exclusivement masculine - naît. Tandis que Pardner chante son amour (I Still See Elisa), Rotten Luck Willie - le joueur véreux - fredonne le mauvais temps (They Call the Wind Maria). L'arrivée d'une famille de Mormons bouleverse la communauté. Jacob Woodling a deux femmes : Sarah - jeune mère d'un bébé - et Elizabeth, qu'il accepte de vendre aux enchères. Pour 800 dollars, Ben - ivre mort - remporte la mise et le mariage a lieu. Mais Elizabeth se refusera à son mari tant qu'il ne lui aura pas construit une maison en bois. Ben accepte le marché à contre-cœur (A Million Miles Away) et ramène des prostituées pour les autres hommes.
The film begins with a wagon crashing into a ravine. Prospector Ben Rumson finds that of the two adult male occupants, one is dead and his brother injured with a broken arm and leg. As the man is about to be buried, gold dust is discovered at the graveside. Ben stakes a claim on the land and the surviving brother is adopted as his "Pardner" while he recuperates. They then share the spoils of Ben's prospecting on the condition that Pardner takes care of Ben in his moments of drunkenness and melancholy. Pardner pines for a non-existent girl ("I Still See Elisa").
