The months of the year, composed by Fanny Hensel in 1841, unfolds as a colourful cycle of character pieces for the listener. It was at that time a popular genre: the lyrical, enchanting atmosphere of brief moments – written mostly for the piano – can be traced back to the Baroque doctrine of the affections, but reached its pinnacle in the Romantic period. “Waldesrauschen”, for example, a rustling of leaves that Franz Liszt put into music, may be just as representative of this as Robert Schumann‘s “Kinderszenen” or “Lieder ohne Worte” by Felix Mendelssohn.

In this new album by violinist and composer Diego Conti, the minimalist ensemble (violin and percussion) becomes a mean and a pretext to search new effects in the simplest and most primordial forms of sound. The extreme contrast between the frequencies, the timbres and the different “attacks” of the sounds of the instruments create atmospheres with which the composer gives life to imaginary planets, visited in his frequent science fiction readings, his great passion.

Acclaimed bassist Ulf Ivarsson got a copy of The Beatles Revolver when he was just 3 years old, and the stream of great music continued as he immersed himself in music from Mott The Hoople, David Bowie, and many more. From Pop, to Punk, to ambient, to Jazz, Ivarsson kept searching and learning. A true musical nomad, Ulf Ivarsson became an acclaimed producer, composer, and bandleader. He discovered Bill Laswell through a fellow bassist (and mentor) when he was in his teens.

Lloyd's recording titled Oriental Jazz, produced in the 1960s, has become a much sought after collectors' item. He is currently popular in Europe and the UK and continues to create jazz and oriental music blends. He can play 100 instruments in 15 jazz, ethnic and world music traditions. Lloyd Miller received a doctorate in Middle East Studies: Persian, concentrating on Persian music with a minor in music (jazz.) In 1970 Miller was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to return to Iran to research and complete his dissertation soon after was published by Rutledge Curzon under the title "Music and Song in Persia."

Years of study and travel are blessings not afforded to many. It is precious when the results of these blessings are channeled by an artist into genuine and heartfelt statements. For pianist/composer Álvaro Torres, globetrotting and absorbing musical information from around the world has led him to the root of music’s importance to him, namely emotional expression. Torres’s new recording, Heart Is The Most Important Ingredient, provides a perfect example of the pianist’s affecting art.

The band spent five weeks at vocalist/guitarists Ed Robertson's cabin outside Toronto pre pandemic writing and recording in a makeshift studio. During pandemic lockdown, they decided they wanted to polish things up a bit. They returned to a Toronto studio when the lockdown lifted to rework the tracks resulting in 'Detour de Force'.

In 2021, the international contemporary music festival Only Connect commissioned an interpretation from I LIKE TO SLEEP of the first movement of Olivier Messiaen’s Turangalila symphony. A project which initially led to a 15-minute piece performed at the festival, with the trio re-writing the music of Messiaen, but also rewriting the music of their own. Messiaen as a reference and compositional tool may be heard in the album for those really listening for references.
