Philip Glass comments in his liner notes that the constellation Orion may be seen year-round from both northern and southern hemispheres and that it appears to have inspired myths and stories in almost every culture. Organized around this unifying idea, Orion, a collaborative work by Glass and other artists for the 2004 Olympiad, is an expansive multicultural celebration, inspired by stargazing but ultimately oriented toward the Earth and its diverse inhabitants.

Don’t let yourself be fooled by the carnivalesque cover art and the rather commercial title of this album. The works presented on this disc make for a fantastic compilation – as does the sound quality of the recordings.

The deluxe edition of Steven Wilson's Get All You Deserve includes the entire two-hour Mexico City concert on a pair of CDs plus one DVD and one Blu-Ray. Originally issued only on video, the audio component is highly beneficial for fans for a couple of reasons. For starters, the recording quality is nothing short of stunning. Secondly, these 14 tracks are different versions of those found on a live CD sold only on the Grace for Drowning tour. Given how in-the-moment Wilson's performances can be, and the distinctive nature of shifting arrangements, it's a treat to compare differences between versions. The lineup here is comprised of woodwind/multi-instrumentalist Theo Travis, keyboardist Adam Holzman, bass and stick player Nick Beggs, and drummer Marco Minnemann. Guitarist Niko Tsonev, who replaced Catalog's Aziz Ibrahim, has since been replaced by Guthrie Govan.

Orchestral music by the orchestra of the German director Max Greger, a great dance music stylist, decorating with refined taste rhythmic accuracy of their interpretations. An air of leisure, if not outright luxury, pervades pianist Ragna Schirmer's 1999 recording of J.S. Bach's Goldberg Variations. From the deluxe double-disc packaging – many Goldberg recordings make do with only one CD – to the taking of all repeats, this is a set for dedicated listeners who have ample time to appreciate the subtleties of Bach's art of variation, and the patience to devote nearly 87 minutes to hearing this work straight through. It would be unfair to suggest that Schirmer plays the variations too slowly, or that the performance is in any way sluggish or tedious because she takes her time. Indeed, she is quite capable of imparting a feeling of virtuosity and brilliance as she skillfully works her way through the embellishments and the trickier passages of Bach's elaborate counterpoint, …….

Joseph Balthasar Hochreither (1669-1731) from a family of Salzburg court musicians, was appointed briefly as organist at the Benedictine convent in Nonnberg before taking up his position for life in Lambach in 1694 where he remained until 1721. Almost all of his 21 works to have survived were composed during this period, with the exception of the festival mass on this recording dating from the year 1731. Hochreither was appointed as cathedral chapter organist in Salzburg in 1721. He died on 14 December 1731 in the city of his birth and was buried in the St Peter cemetery. Gunar Letzbor

If you're ever going to like or maybe even love the piano music of Ernst Krenek, it will probably be with his three-movement Piano Sonata No. 1, Op. 2, from 1919. A comely and lithe spirit of a work compared with his austerely expressive later works, this sonata is still an enormously ambitious work for a 19-year-old. But pianist Geoffrey Douglas Madge plays the First with complete sympathy and dedication to its youthful expressivity.
