Although I'm less aquainted with the Francis recording of No. 5, and have yet to hear Kahler, I can say that this interpretation won me over after one listening. If you have some familiarity with and appreciation of Petterson's sound world, then I think you'll have the same experience too. The viola concerto is a work in the ripe and "soulful" manner of late Pettersson, although more accessible than works like ……….

These three pianists popularized the rhythmically rambunctious style of piano-playing known as boogie woogie, and with more than 25 tracks between them, this import offers a great overview. Ammons and Johnson duet on most of the tracks (Walkin' the Boogie, Sixth Avenue Express, etc.), but all three take solo turns, as well as joining together for a poundin' Jumpin' Blues. Some of these pianists' finest tracks, from Carnegie Hall concerts & rare MacGregor transcription discs, remastered from original discs & acetates.

Best remembered for the AM radio classic "Moonlight Feels Right," Starbuck formed in Atlanta in 1974 – singer/keyboardist Bruce Blackman and percussionist Bo Wagner previously served in the sunshine pop outfit Eternity's Children, enjoying fleeting success with the minor chart hit "Mrs. Bluebird." After collaborating on a never-released LP under the moniker Mississippi, the duo again parted ways, with Blackman focusing on his composing career and Wagner hitting the road as Liberace's musical director.

Taylor's Universe is a Danish progressive rock group led by multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Robin Taylor. Their album “Soundwall” features a newcomer whose name, Michael Denner (of King Diamond, Mercyful Fate). The rest of the band consists of Robin Taylor (guitars, bass, piano, organ, tron, synths, stringman, toy keyboard, glockenspiel, percussion, voice, tapes, treatment), Karsten Vogel (saxophones), Rasmus Grosell (drums), Louise Nipper (voice) and as described in the liner notes, Victoria Bjerre as the little voice on track “Aspx”.

Kuijken was born in Dilbeek, near Brussels. He was a member of the Alarius Ensemble of Brussels between 1964 and 1972 and formed La Petite Bande in 1972. Since 1971 he has taught Baroque violin at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and the Koninklijk Muziekconservatorium in Brussels. He is noted for using the older technique of resting the violin on the shoulder without a shoulder rest, rather than held under the chin. He is a member of the Kuijken String Quartet, which he formed in 1986. In recent years, he has also performed as conductor of symphonies of the Romantic era.

There have been a number of very fine performances on CD and DVD of of this marvellous timeless work - arguably the greatest masterpiece in the history of classical ballet - but a really good Blu ray disc is surely the visual holy grail! In my view this is by far the best overall presentation of Swan Lake to date. The playing and sound are magical under Gergiev's assured hand and the dancing is superb. It largely uses the traditional Petipa / Ivanov choreography. None of the sexual mannerisms that made Nureyev's dancing and choreography so distinctive, and the casting, costumes and sets are wonderfully conceived. No video performances include all the music Tchaikovsky wrote but this performance at 129 minutes seems quite complete…
