La Habana: Rio Conexion is saxophonist Paquito D'Rivera's attempt to bring the gospel of historical bolero to American listeners. These 12 cuts are steeped in the grand Cuban tradition and reinsert its cultural and historical center into a music that has been watered down to the point of being nondescript. But, of course, this is also a jazz recording, and D'Rivera is a jazz musician. The rhythmic and harmonic extrapolations are minimal, however, and focus on the integral form of the music whether it be the album's opening danza, Ernesto Lecuona's "La Comparsa," or the chorinho that closes the proceedings, Pixinguinha's "Segura Ele."

The third album from Magic Bus rolls on into the distant future by way of the golden streets of the past. If sunny progressive rock is your bag… then jump on the Bus and forget about the fuss! Recorded over 9 days at Vale studios in Worcestershire, the band are spacebound in their silver jetpacks… determined to find Utopia. The album has the Canterbury/West coast vibe the band are known for, but now with the added influence of vintage Prog clearly coming to the fore.

Continuing his revived collaboration with producer Steve Jordan – the pair first worked together on 1999's Take Your Shoes Off, then reunited on 2014's In My Soul – Robert Cray headed to Memphis to cut his 18th studio set with members of the legendary Hi Rhythm Section. Setting up shop at Royal Studios, Cray got to work on a handful of originals and a collection of covers, not all of them strictly related to Memphis. In particular, Cray pushes swamp rocker Tony Joe White and "5" Royales leader Lowman Pauling, cutting two songs from each writer.

“The Big Wig” is a masterpiece by the multi-talented vocal marvel Andreas Schaerer. This is a work which situates him quite clearly and definitively among the most important composers and interpreters of contemporary music of his generation.

The three-disc, 50-track collection 50 Plus Belles Chansons is an excellent compilation of material from throughout Alain Bashung's three decade career. It contains all the hits and some well-chosen live and album cuts. It is both an excellent introduction to the artist and a seamless listening treat for fans.
